CIRQUE DU SOLEIL FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY AS RESULT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC; NO STRATEGY FOR SHOW REOPENINGS

After laying off 95% of its employees in mid-March due to the effects of the COVID-19 and the closure of its theaters and shows worldwide, Cirque du Soleil has filed for bankruptcy.

The company has announced that it is seeking debt restructuring protection under the Canadian Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA). The company has not specified a strategy for if and when it can resume shows. CEO Daniel Lamarre released a statement regarding potential for the company to rebuild and restructure itself in the coming years:

“I look forward to rebuilding our operations and coming together to once again create the magical spectacle that is Cirque du Soleil for our millions of fans worldwide.”

No official announcements have been made regarding the debut of the upcoming new “Drawn to Life” show at Disney Springs.
