WHO WILL BE VACCINATED FIRST AGAINST COVID-19 IN MEXICO: DATES AND STAGES

Faced with the shocking COVID-19 pandemic, which continues to reduce the lives of millions of people around the world, a vaccination strategy was presented to be able to face the health contingency in Mexico.

At a press conference, from the National Palace, the undersecretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell, affirmed that the vaccination program that is expected to be applied throughout 2021, has scientific foundations and the best disease control practices.

He explained that a group of scientists and technicians, both Mexican and foreign, are working on the ideal design and strategy against the coronavirus, in which the platform called Covax, which allows you to acquire the product to have the management of the epidemic.

Although he warned that the initial production and distribution of the vaccine may be limited, since there are currently about 200 candidate vaccines in the world, of which only 12 are already in the most advanced phase 3 of clinical research.

However, the secretary of health Jorge Alcocer signed a series of agreements such as that of the platform Covax, which will allow access to possible vaccine candidates, such as the one already agreed with the company AstraZeneca allied with the University of Oxford, to acquire 77 million doses. As well as the contract that was signed with the company Pfizer to access 34.4 million doses, among other.

In this sense, López-Gatell stressed that all these vaccines, as well as those that appear, will be applied to the population but following a priority plan, since it will depend on the risk in which citizens are located, with respect to their age. and pregnant women and children will be avoided.

Thus the stages and time span of the vaccination strategy will be divided as follows.

* First it will be for health workers, who are located in the first front of the fight against COVID-19 (From December 2020 – February 2021)

* Then it will be the remaining health personnel and people aged 60 years and over (February – April 2021)

* Later the dose will be applied to people from 50 to 59 years old (April – May 2021)

* In stage four, citizens from 40 to 49 years old will be included (May – June 2021)

* Finally the rest of the population of (June-March 2022)

The application of the vaccine will depend on the risk in which the population is.

The undersecretary of health explained that it is contemplated to reach the coverage goal throughout the coming year, and it will be dispersed depending on the risk of the population, such as: age, presence of chronic diseases, immunodeficiencies, among others.

It is a scheme similar to that used by the United States and Canada for immunizations of the WHO.

He also advanced the signing of an agreement to have access to Janssen vaccines from the pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson and announced that there is an income from the Chinese company Cansino, to access more than 30 million doses.

In the vaccination strategy designed to face the coronavirus disease in the country, Mexican health professionals participate, as well as specialists from abroad and four officials from the Pan American Health Organization. In addition to the president of the strategic advisory group for immunization of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Mexican scientist Alejandro Cravioto Quintana.

For his part, secretary of health, Jorge Alcocer, reiterated that Mexico has been actively participating in various initiatives for months, in order to have access to the vaccine by establishing

the safety of the population as a priority.

To guarantee the doses, scientists and specialists must analyze that they are effective and comply with the necessary requirements to protect people’s lives.
